Trotsky was radically expunged from

Soviet visual memory. Grigory Petrovich

Goldstein’s photographs depicting Lenin’s

1920 speech in Moscow are the most

famous example. In the 1930s only

photographic details not containing Trotsky

could be published; in the 1960s pictures

were retouched so as to remove him entirely.
